Computers have been classified into different categories based on size, application and Purpose.

Classification of computer according to application :~
1. Analog Computer :~ Analog computer is a machine that measure the physical amount of data and demonstrates its permanent in points. Example:~ Pressure, Temperature, Length, Height, Speed, Voltage, etc.
Analog computer measure the constant changes in physical quantities and usually present the output as reading on dial or scale.
It is that type of computer which measure quantities of electric power, body temperature, air pressure and physical condition. It is represent only numbers.
Note:~ Analog computers can not store the data.
2. Digital Computer :~ The digital computer use the binary number (0,1) to represent information digitally. It converts computers data and program to 0,1 and takes it in electronic form. It represents letters, numbers or special symbols. These are mostly use to perform arithmetic operations. These computers provide output based on text, graphics and pictures.
Note:~ Digital computers can store information.
3. Hybrid Computer :~ It is that type of computer, which has both features of analog computer and digital computer. These computer also understands the analog signal and binary number (0,1). In a hybrid computer, information can be converted from digital to analog and analog to digital. These computers are used in hospitals. The device used to measure the patient's body temperature and measure blood pressure fall under the category of hybrid computer.
Classification of computer according to purpose:~
1. General purpose computer :~ The computers we use today are almost all general purpose computers. You are reading this article on a general purpose computer and we have also prepared this article on a general purpose computer.
General purpose computer is a computer that has the ability to perform many activities. You can write research papers by this, you can prepare and print documents, you can prepare the budget of your home, office, business sales chart, Controlling to the security system of organization etc.
Note :~ desktop, notebooks are all general purpose computers.
2. Special purpose computer :~ Special purpose computers are computers designed to perform a specific task. This computer can perform only one task at a time. The CPU capacity of a special purpose computer is greater than the CPU of a general purpose computer. Special purpose computers are used in the fields of astronomy, meteorology, transportation control, research, satellite operation, agronomy, medical and engineering, etc.
Classification of computer according to size :~
1. Micro Computer :~ Micro Computer was invented in 1970. MicroComputer is a complete computer on a small scale, designed for used by one person at a time. Micro computer is new primarily called a personal computer and it device based on a single-chip microprocessor. Desktop computers, laptops and smartphones are types of microcomputers. Micro computer is specially designed for general uses like entertainment and educational purpose.
2. Workstation :~ Usually, a computer which is connected to a network is called a work station. They are a single user computer designed for technical or scientific applications. It has fast microprocessor, large amount of RAM and high speed graphic adapters. They are developed keeping in mind the business and professionals. These computers are faster and more efficient than Micro Computers. Workstation are of various types such as music workstations, graphics workstations and engineering design workstations. These are expensive and more work capacity than microcomputers and are large in size.
3. Mini computer :~ Minicomputer is a type of computer that possesses most of the features and capabilities of a large computer but is smaller in physical size. Minicomputers are mainly used as small mid-range servers operating business and scientific applications. Minicomputers may be also be called a mid-range computer. Minicomputer that is smaller, less expensive and less powerful than a mainframe or supercomputer but more expensive and more powerful than a microcomputer. It is a small computers that was introduced into the world in the mid-1960s. Minicomputer is a computer which has all the features of a large size computer but its size is smaller than those mainframe computer are mainly multi user system where more than on 4-200 user can work together.
4. Mainframe computer :~ Mainframe computer are a type of computer that generally are known for their large size, amount of storage, process power and high levels of reliability. Banks, educational institutions and insurance companies use mainframe computer to store data about their customers, students and insurance policy holders. Mainframe computer have the ability to run multiple operating systems. Mainframe computer are designed to handle in very high volume input and output data.
5. Super computer :~ Super computer is a computer with a high level of performance compared to a general computer. Super computer play an important role in the field of science and used for a wide-range of computationally intensive task in various in fields weather forecasting, climate research, oil and gas exploration. Super computer is the fastest and most powerful computer of the world.
The most powerful computer in terms of performance and data processing are the super computers. These are specialized task specific computers used by large organizations. These computers are used for research and exploration purposes, like NASA used super computers for launching space shuttles, controlling them and for space explorations purposes. The super computer are very expensive and very large in size. It can be install in large air conditioned rooms, Seymour cray designed the first super computer “CDC 6600” in 1964. “CDC 6600” in known as the first super computer.
Super computer is a computer that performs at or near the currently highest operational rate for computer. Traditionally, super computers have been used for scientific and engineering applications. It handle very large data base or do a great amount of computation. Super computer are multi-core processors and GPGPUS (General purpose graphics processing units).
Super computer is the fastest computer in the world that can process a significant amount of data very quickly and easily. The computing performance of a super computer is measured in FLOPS (that is floating-point operations per second).
Note :~ India built its first supercomputer PARAM - 8000 in 1 July 1991. Param Computer was developed by C-DAC, an organization of the Government of India. Pratyush and Mihir are the fastest supercomputers in India.
