Introduction of Dos

The full name of MS-DOS is Microsoft Disk Operating System. Which was created by Microsoft Corporation. This is the oldest operating system used in old age computers. It is already installed in many computers or laptops even today. The first Microsoft Windows operating system used to run on MS-DOS and even today the Windows operating system supports DOS. It is a command line based operating system. In which commands have to be typed in text form to perform any task or 'It is a CUI (Character User Interface) based operating system. This means that whatever input and output functions are in it, it is only in the text form. It does not contain any graphics. It is a single user single tasking computer operating system. It has been the most successful operating system so far because it is very simple and small in size.

History of DOS

DOS was invented in 1980 by American programmer Time Peterson. Which was initially known as 86-DOS. Its rights were with a company named Seattle Computer Products. DOS was later bought by Microsoft Corporation and renamed to MS-DOS version 1.0. Which was used in IBM PC between 1980-1990.

Follow these steps to start Command Prompt in Windows:-

• Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard.

• Now type cmd in the Run dialog box and press Enter.

There are two types of dos commands:-

1. Internal Command

2. External Command

1. Internal Command :~ Internal DOS commands are those commands that are included in the command processor (command.com). The internal dos command resides in the program file of dos. Which is loaded into memory when the computer system is started. This command is not in the form of a file, but it is in the form of a special word. Which is used to perform a specific task.

Example:~ Cls, Date, Time, Copy con, Type, Rename, copy, Delete, Dir, MD, CD, RD, etc .

2. External Command:~ An external command is a file that resides in the hard disk. It has an extension of .com, .exe or .bat. In this a command works only when a file named after that command is present in the floppy disk or hard disk otherwise a message named "Bad command" or "filename" It shows. External commands are slower than internal commands.

Example:~ tree, xcopy, diskcopy, more, fdisk, format, etc.
