Updated: Jun 1, 2021

The history of the computer is approximately 3000 years old. Many other machines were invented before the computer that is used. Which made significant contribution in the development of the computer. The reason behind the computer invention was to “make education easier”.

1. Abacus :~ It was invented by Babylonian in 16th century. It was first built in china and most used in china, japan and Russia. It was the first mechanical calculating machine. Abacus is used to solve the mathematical problems. It is a device made from pearls on a rod in the frame. The teachers focus primarily on teaching children using this tool because it helps in developing the ability of students to complete the mental mathematics. It is first calculating device of the world.

2. Napier’s Bones :~ It was invented by John Napier in 1617. John Napier made a calculation device that was in the 20th century. This device was made of rods but the most of these rods were made of horn or ivory-hence they became known as Napier’s bones. Napier’s bones became a very popular device for calculating in England and western Europe, because most people lacked these mathematical skills.

3. Pascaline :~ It was invented by Blaise pascal in 1642. Pascaline, also called adding Machine. It can do only add and subtraction. The brass rectangular box used eight movable dials to add. Blaise Pascal invented the machine for his father, a tax collector, so it was the first business machine.

4. Stepped reckoner :~ It was invented by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1672. This machine can add, subtract, multiply and divide automatically. It was a digital mechanical calculator.

5. Jacquard Loom :~ It was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1881. Joseph Marie Jacquard was a Francis’s weaver and trader. Jacquard loom was a device like a cardboard paper, in which the punch card could recognize his data by the holes. The punch card was used as input device.

6. Charles Babbage :~ Charles Babbage was the professor of mathematics of Cambridge university. Charles Babbage was born in England in 26 December 1791. Charles Babbage is called Father of modern Computer. Charles Babbage is previously credited to make automated mechanical computers. Which is difference engine and analytical engine is the famous invention of the world.

7. Difference engine :~ The difference Engine is an initial calculation machine. It is capable of calculating multiple sets of numbers and make the hard copy of the results. The difference engine were steam-running machine. Difference engine was first developed by Charles Babbage in 1822.

8. Analytical engine :~ Charles Babbage created an automated machine analytical engine in 1842, which used to work according to the punch card guidelines. The analytical engine had a ‘store’, where numbers and results could be organized. The analytical engine is one of the most successful invention of Charles Babbage. Analytical engine could performed four mathematical functions - Add, Subtraction, Multiplication and division. It had a variety of outputs including hard copy printout, punch card.

9. Ada Lovelace :~ she was the first computer programmer. She developed the binary number system on which modern computer. Lady Augusta was an English mathematician and writer. He worked on the analytical engine created by Charles Babbage and first understood that the analytical engine can do much more with pure calculation. Lady Ada was the first woman who understood the full potential of computing machine. She had predicted that the analytical engine can be used to make music, graphics can be produce and be useful for science, which was came true in 100 years.

10. ENIAC :~ ENIAC stand for Electronic Numerical Integrator and computer. It was the first electronic general purpose digital computer such as solving a large class of numerical problems. It was invented by j. Presper Eckert and john Mauchly in 10 December 1945.

11. EDVAC :~ EDVAC stand for Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer. EDVAC was one of the first-round electronic computer. The EDVAC was an automated binary serial computer that could perform automatic Addition, subtraction, multiplication and programed division. Ultrasonic Serial Memory was used for automatic checking, which had 1000 words of 34-bit. As a binary number serial computer, EDVAC processed mathematical tasks with 5.5 kb serial memory capacity. EDVAC used the magnetic tape as a data media and which could be run for more than 20 hours in a day. ENIAC inventor John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert proposed to build the EDVAC in August 1944.

12. UNIVAC :~ UNIVAC stand for universal automatic computer. It was developed by two scientist John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert in 1951. It was the first commercial computer that could manage numerical and alphabetical function. In which used the vacuum tube and magnetic tape for input and output functions.

13. Mark 1 :~ The invention of Mark 1 was done with the cooperation of the company called IBM. It was the first completely automated electronic calculation machine designed by Howard Aiken in 1937. Mark 1 is also known as ASCC (Automatic sequence controlled calculator). It was very complex in design and was very big in size (50 feet long, 8 feet height and 5 tons). This machine was based on the concept of an analytical engine and was the first operational general purpose computer. Which could automatically execute preprogrammed instructions without any human intervention. Compared to today’s computer, this machine was very slow.
